What is Neurofeedback Training?

Like other types of biofeedback, Neurofeedback trainings use monitoring tools to inform a person about their state of physical activity from minute to minute. The feature that sets neurofeedback training as well as other types of biofeedback is the focus on the central nervous system and brain. Neurofeedback (NFT) training is based on basic and applied neurology as well as data-driven clinical practice. It focuses on behavioral, mental and subject aspects as well as brain activity.

A balanced assessment of brain activity and psychological status will be performed prior to the NFT. During exercise, sensors are placed on the skin and then connected to sensor electronics and computer software that detects, amplifies, and records specific brain activity. Feedback is provided to the trainer almost immediately with the conceptual understanding that changes in the feedback signal indicate whether the trainer’s brain activity is within an acceptable range. Based on this feedback, a series of teaching principles and recommendations from the practitioner lead to changes in brain patterns and are associated with progressive changes in physical, emotional and mental state. The coach is often unaware of how these changes will be achieved, although people regularly gain a “sense of awareness” of these positive changes and can often access these states outside of the feedback session.

Neurofeedback Training and Brain Plasticity

The brain is truly an amazing organ on which science reveals new information every day.

Our brain is involved in almost every function of our body, both conscious and unconscious. We actively use our brains to move our arms, stand, dance, talk or remember. Digestion, respiration, heart rate, blood pressure and blood pressure are things we don’t even have to think about. Our brains take care of regulating these activities.

It used to be thought that there were no real changes in the brain when they grew up. We thought we were stuck with what we had. Newer science has shown that the brain can change. Things like chronic stress can cause negative physical changes in the brain. Things like learning a musical instrument, a new language, or other skills can cause positive changes in the brain.

Neurofeedback training is a method of using technology to measure the electrical signals that come with the brain when neurons interact and provide feedback to teach the brain to make positive changes. Electrical signals are measured by small sensors placed on a scalp. These sensors are connected to a device connected to a computer. Signals are processed and displayed as line graphs, bar graphs and digital displays. The process uses goals that are set to stimulate or reduce the power of a certain frequency that is, theta, alpha, and beta. When goals are met, feedback will be sent to alert the coach that his brain is in the state you want. Feedback can be in the form of a light or color change, animation, film or game, sound or music. This feedback strengthens the brain and re-stimulates it, as it did to get feedback.

Neurofeedback training is used in addition to other therapies to help people with symptoms related to sleep, stress, attention, emotional problems, trauma, learning difficulties, and substance abuse.

It’s a non-invasive, drug-free process and most people find it pleasant and relaxing. This is a good way to make positive use of brain plasticity.
