Neurofeedback Equipment for Meditation and Hypnosis

Some of the more common uses for neurofeedback equipment are helping people clinically for issues like ADHD, anxiety, insomnia, and depression.  I am going to discuss two other applications that might not be as common.  Meditation has been around for a long time.  Many people practice meditation.  Many others don’t think that they can meditate.  Some have tried unsuccessfully.  There are various types of meditation practices.  One type of meditation is guided, where the meditator follows a series of guided imagery instructions to help to put them into a relaxed state.  Another type of meditation is silent.  The meditator sits quietly, allowing their minds to be quiet as much as possible.  They are not expected to not think at all.  They are just instructed not to intentionally think and to allow any thoughts that do come up to pass.  More time between thoughts seems to be a goal of this type of meditation. How to Use Biofeedback Equipment

Biofeedback Equipment is a process that uses instruments that record physiological signals from a person’s body and then display the information so that a person can learn to change the signal that is being measured.  One therapeutic application of biofeedback is for helping people with stress-related disorders.  In this context sensors may be attached to a client and signals including muscle tension, breathing, and heart rate is measured and displayed on a computer screen.  The client with the help of coaching from a therapist learns to control these signals and bring them to a more relaxed level.

Biofeedback, Medical or Educational?

Is biofeedback medical or educational?

Biofeedback equipment has been around since the 1960s, yet some people still don’t know about it.

Being able to use technology to help learn control over physiology has almost endless applications.

Many people have been working hard for a long time to make biofeedback more accepted by the medical system.  There are physical medical applications like tension and migraine headaches, neck pain, back pain, other types of chronic pain, muscle spasm, hypertension, and asthma.  There are also mental health applications like ADHD, anxiety, PTSD, and depression.

Mind Body Seminars

Although more people are now interested in mind body techniques like meditation, mindfulness, and yoga, there is still a great lack of clarity as to what the real effects of these techniques are.  It is also often difficult to know if a person practicing a technique is doing it correctly or getting the maximum benefit they can from it.

Several months ago, I was at a university in New York city visiting a meditation group.  The two people who were leading the group were interested in using EEG biofeedback equipment to measure the brainwave activity of people who were meditating.  They were interested in comparing the EEG activity of a novice meditator with that of a very experienced one.  This is one example of how technology can be used in combination with mind body techniques.  The idea was to see if there is a difference in what is going on in the brain while a person is meditating and does that vary depending on their experience level.

Biofeedback and Neurofeedback Training for APA Continuing Education Credit

Many psychologists in the United States of America are required to take training to keep up with new developments in the field and to remind them of things that they may have learned a long time ago.

There are many options for training including face to face programs, online programs, and material that psychologists can read. There are also many different topics that can be studied. As long as you have to take training you might as well make it something interesting, enjoyable, and useful. Biofeedback and neurofeedback are subjects that check all of those boxes. Psychologists tend to do a lot of talking and paperwork as a part of their routine. Some of this can become monotonous.

Neurofeedback Equipment for Mental Health

Mental health symptoms and solutions are being openly discussed more than ever.  Most days that I turn on the news I hear at least one story related to mental health.  Just today I heard a report about three separate people who were survivors or a relative of a survivor of a school shooting who committed suicide.  We often hear reports of the devastation across the country related to abuse of opioid drugs.  Concussions caused by car accidents, slip and falls, sports injuries cause memory loss, behavior and mood changes as well as other problems.
