I. Stress and Heart-Attacks - by Harry Campbell
"Fireman's fatal heart-attack linked to stress". According to a May 26th
Associated Press report, Jay Maddy, a 41 year-old Eaton, IN, firefighter was
part of a team responding to 21 arson fires between 3:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m.
The team continued to patrol the town to prevent additional arsons. Mr.
Maddy endured a 24 hour period without sleep during this event. There were
no signs of any serious health problems. The only symptom that was apparent
was fatigue. He suffered a heart-attack the next day and died the following
day. The IN state fire marshal's office is ruling his death to be "in the
line of duty". His family will qualify for full line-of-duty benefits.
This is a current example of how stress can cause or make symptoms worse. A
person may have an existing problem with their cardiovascular system but it
might not normally cause significant symptoms. When this person only has to
deal with minor everyday stress they may not seem to have any more problems
than the average healthy person. They might have a lifespan that is a few
years shorter than another person but that would probably not appear to be
noteworthy. If the same person is put through unusual stress, their already
weakened cardiovascular system may break down in a dramatic way like a
heart-attack. On-going stress management/reduction can reduce a person's
baseline stress level so that when stress increases to unusual levels the
system may have more of a reserve to handle it. Biofeedback assisted
relaxation training can be very helpful in this process. Many people don't
know that they have compromised systems like the cardiovascular system
because they don't have any symptoms that are noticeable enough to seek
medical attention for them.
Stress can be mental or physical. I am a college and pro basketball and
football fan. Over the past 20 years or so I can remember several cases
where a seemingly healthy athlete has simply dropped dead on the court or
field. I believe that in some of these cases the person had a medical
defect that probably would not have showed up had the person not been an
athlete. I believe that the level of stress that a college or professional
athlete puts on their body is much greater than that of a non-athlete. The
many practices and games can cause much greater stress on the body systems
than the average person. This high level of physical stress can be enough
to cause a serious problem like a fatal heart-attack. The same person might
lead a normal life if they did not put such a high level of physical stress
on a system with a defect.
The same can be true of mental or emotional stress. Ongoing higher than
normal levels of stress can cause noticeable, serious symptoms, especially
to already compromised body systems. Sometimes the results can even be
fatal.
